WARA Meetings

WARA meets the 2nd Sunday of the month, with exceptions for conflicts with holidays (check program schedule at right), starting at 4:00 PM at the Derby Recreation Center (directions) located at 801 E. Market, Derby, Kansas.

WARA Contests

We offer the opportunity to enter three different contests each year to our members. Each contest takes us through the writing process, beginning with the Practice Your Right Hook Contest in March to hone the opening of our book or story, the Flyover Contest in July to ensure the story encompasses the main points of a publishable work, and the Happily-Ever-After Contest in November to complete the story with a happy and satisfying ending.

Book-in-a-Week (BIAW)

Being a part of our BIAW email loop provides any member interested with an incentive to write. Each person sets a goal for a specific number of pages to be written during a designated week. Encouragement by all is a large part of the fun, and at the end of the week it's determined how many pages have been written.

Mission: Possible

The purpose of Mission: Possible each month is to stretch our minds to include a variety of unrelated words in a sentence, a paragraph, or short scene. It can be used as a jump-start for a book or short story and always lends a spark of inspiration.

WARA Awards

There's nothing like celebrating our achievements, and that's what we do at the end of each year at our Christmas Party. Not only the positive achievements, but also those that might seem not so positive, such as a computer crash. Winners of awards receive a certificate and small prize.

Bits & Bytes: Romance the Writer's Way

Our blog began on April 1, 2009 and joined hesitantly by those who had never blogged. Since then, we've all found it a fun way to share information on writing, especially romance. Each month or every two weeks, we focus on a new topic, with everyone participating in sharing what they've learned about writing romance.

If you aren't currently a member of the blogging group, use the Contact Us link on the left and let us know. You'll be sent an invitation to join us!
